LA Illuminator: Louisiana ranks 48th in overall child well-being, a report finds

Louisiana’s challenges have long been a constant. Allison Plyer, a chief demographer at the Data Center, a nonprofit in New Orleans that analyzes data in Southeastern Louisiana, helped write Pandemic to Prosperity, a series of reports looking at the conditions in vulnerable communities — including those in the South. She said disasters, like the COVID-19 pandemic, “accelerate pre-existing trends.”

NCoC senior fellow Denice Ross said she wished the bureau would release information at the county level rather than just the state level, and share “paradata” — information it is collecting on how long each enumerator spends inputting data into their handheld devices, which can help indicate whether the information is being gleaned through asking each person interviewed or by other means such as visual identification.

With the 2020 census into its final stage, more than one in three people hired as census takers have quit or failed to show up.

Many still on the job are going door to door in areas that largely track places where there are elevated rates of coronavirus infections, according to calculations by the National Conference on CitizenshipCivis Analytics and The New York Times.

Louisiana Illuminator: How long will it take America to move from ‘Pandemic to Prosperity?’

Building on their success with that project, Plyer and Ross have helped create Pandemic to Prosperity, a running analysis that will measure how the United States is faring as it tries to move past this coronavirus era.

Published by the National Conference on Citizenship (NCOC) and announced July 21, six months after the first report that the novel coronavirus had reached this country, the authors say they want the public to consider their resource a “trusted, relevant, and highly-vetted source of information.”

Prof. Alex Kenna of Virginia Commonwealth University discussed the 2020 Census redistricting data scheduled for release by August 16.

Dr. Clarence Wardell of the White House Domestic Policy Council introduced the discussion.
